Amancio Alonso is a licensed real estate broker who previously served 20 years as president of Macmillan Oil Company in Miami. He assumed the latter position in 1995, at which point Macmillan had annual sales of $750,000, and helped drive annual sales to more than $700 million by the time he left the company in 2015. In addition to his pursuits in real estate and oil and gas, Amancio Alonso has owned race horses for more than four decades. His horse Amardine recorded a victory for his stable in 2020 with a first-place finish at the Sam Houston track on March 18.
Amardine won the race, which carried a $15,000 purse, despite unfavorable odds. The horse was given 10/1 odds to win the race, whereas second and third-place finishers, Can't Touch This and Milli Starr, had 5/1 and 7/2 odds to win the race, respectively. Four other horses also had better odds than Amardine.
The victory was the second of Amardine's career. The horse won its first race in June 2019 at Gulfstream Park. It had competed in seven races as of July 10, 2020, and also has two other top-three finishes. Amardine has earned $37,160 in prize money to date. The horse is trained by Rylee Grudzien and jockeyed by Timothy Thornton.
